Administrator Person authorised by the court to

administer the estate of someone who dies without making a will.

Administratrix Female version of administrator.

Affidavit A statement which is confirmed by

oath or affirmation.

Animus testandi The intention to create a will.

Assets passing by Assets in joint names, such as bank

survivorship accounts, that pass automatically

to one owner on the death of the other and not by his will.

Attestation The clause in a will confirming that

the will was signed by the testator in the presence of witnesses.

Beneficiary Person who benefits under a will or

under the intestacy rules.

Codicil Document changing some aspect of

the will but leaving the rest intact.

En ventre sa mere A child as yet unborn.

Estate The assets and liabilities left by the

deceased.

Executor Person appointed by will to

administer a deceased person's estate.
